Topic: Passenger wheelbarrow

Action: Wheelbarrow carrying two boys, each with one foot on the frame and the other in the rope stirrup. One boy holds an open umbrella, the other a closed one while two young men stand nearby. The setting is a western’s style garden with a railing before a hedge and a line of trees set against a wall with tiles on top.

Image Particulars: Wheelbarrows were the primary mode of transportation in Shanghai before the rickshaw (1874). They remained in use long after that date.
