Topic: Sampan family

Action: Pair of sampans in dry river or canal bed in which a group of two women and a boy and a girl, are busy, probably with cooking. The decks are partly sheltered with straw mats, some of which are pushed out to open the space. Bedding and clothing are being aired. The front container, which is tucked in a basket, probably holds food.

Image Particulars: While less numerous than in Canton or Hong Kong, lived-in sampans were often seen in the Shanghai area.
